I am feeling very lucky and blessed today. I’ve been trying to figure out what the Old Swedish names of the months were because they were slightly different from the Old Norse, especially in spelling. Recently, I stumbled across a little game that has you match the names of the modern calendar to the Old Swedish month names. It never ceases to amaze me what is available on the internet if you can just find it. You can play the game here.
Modern Name | Old Swedish Name | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| January | Torsmånad / Torremånad | Thor's month / Thorri's month |
| February | Göjemånad | Gói's month |
| March | Vårmånad | Spring month |
| April | Gräsmånad | Grass month |
| May | Blomstermånad | Flower month |
| June | Sommarmånad | Summer month |
| July | Hömånad | Hay month |
| August | Skördemånad | Harvest month |
| September | Höstmånad | Autumn month |
| October | Slaktmånad | Slaughter month |
| November | Vintermånad | Winter month |
| December | Julmånad | Yule month |
You may have noticed that there are slightly different month names for January. Torsmånad appears to be from southern Sweden while Torremånad looks to be from northern Sweden. If you aren’t familiar with the folktale about Thorri and his daughter Gói, you can read up on it here.
